In the Depths of Indifference
As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, my God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When can I go and meet with God?
Psalm 42:1-2
Lord, my soul doesn't pant for You (Psalm 42:1).
I don't long for You, I don't yearn for You.
I'm indifferent.
I'm indifferent toward You, who sent your Son to live the perfect life that I couldn't (John 1:14; 1 John 3:5; 2 Corinthians 5:21).
I'm indifferent about You, Jesus, who was whipped, beaten, stripped naked, led on parade to death on the most brutal device that evil hearts could conceive, the crucifix (John 19; Mark15:16-32).
And you hung there broken, bleeding, thirsty (John 19:28), gasping for air.
You asked Your Father to forgive those who mocked You (Luke 23:34)...and I'm sure that there were some in the crowd who were indifferent to what was happening to You.
And, Lord, that's me.
I'm standing at the foot of Your cross knowing that you are paying for my sin (Colossians 1:14), that You are becoming my Advocate before the Father (1 John 2:1-2).
I stand here knowing that You were raised to life and seated at the right hand of the Father (Romans 8:34; Ephesians 1:20; Hebrews 1:3, 8:1, 10:12) and that I will be raised and seated with You because I know and I believe (Ephesians 2:6; Colossians 3:1).
I don't doubt anything that You did.
My heart believes and my mouth confesses (Romans 10:9).
I stand here and recite the Apostle's Creed* in full confidence that my lips speak the truth and yet I am indifferent.
And I don't understand how I can be so unmoved by the weight of the gospel.
How can I be indifferent to the God who knit me together (Psalm 139:13) and counts the hairs on my head (Matthew 10:30) and values me more than the birds that He expertly cares for (Matthew 6:26)?
How can I be indifferent to the Savior who thought of me as He hung on the cross because He knew of the joy that would come (Hebrews 12:2)?
How can I be indifferent to the One who directs my steps (Proverbs 16:9) and has good plans for me (Romans 8:28)?
How can I be indifferent to the One who reaches into the depths of darkness to pull me out and sets my feet on solid ground (Psalm 40:2)?
How can I be indifferent to the God who has my name engraved on His hands (Isaiah 49:16)?
I don't want to be indifferent!
Your love is unfailing and mine fails every day (1 Corinthians 13:8).
I need You!
I need You to revive my love for You, Lord.
Let Your waves of love wash over my life (Psalm 42:7-8).
Do whatever it takes to break me of indifference.
When can I go and meet with You (Psalm 42:2)?
The veil is torn (Luke 23:45) so I will choose to live in the Your presence.
In Your mercy, You meet me here, even in my indifference.
*Apostle's Creed:
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell, the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
